Science: (first circle)

Need for lesson – Materials to make a cyclone in a bottle.

Cyclone

  1. Two 2-liter plastic soda bottles
  2. Water
  3. Food coloring of your choice
  4. Glitter
  5. 3 x 5-inch index card
  6. Masking tape
  7. Duct tape
  8. Scissors.
Instructions
  • Wash out the soda bottles and remove their labels.
  • Fill one bottle with water and add a teaspoon of the food coloring and a few pinches of glitter.
  • The food coloring color doesn’t really matter, it and the glitter are used to make the cyclone more visible.
  • Roll the index card width-wise so that it will fit in the mouths of the soda bottles.
  • Use masking tape to hold the end of the card in place.
  • Put the rolled-up card in the mouth of the bottle that contains the water.
  • Take the other soda bottle and place its mouth over the rolled-up card, pushing the bottle down so the mouths of both bottles are flush.
  • Tape the mouths of the bottles together with duct or electric tape, making sure that the seal between the two is as waterproof as possible.
  • Grab the bottles by their bases and turn the “cyclone” upside down.
  • As the water begins to pour from one bottle to the other, gently swing the bottles in a counterclockwise motion until the tornado forms.

Science 51

We have been talking about the many different kinds of weather we may experience. We also discussed how the four seasons each have certain types of weather. What about storms. What kind of storms are there? Thunder storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, and sandstorms are some different kinds of storms. A storm usually brings very strong winds, called gales, that are often accompanied by other bad weather like heavy rains or snowfalls. Small storms may last just a few hours and some large storms can last for days and cause damage to an area and its buildings. Hurricanes are powerful storms that may be hundreds of miles wide with very very strong winds. A blizzard is a type of storm that has a lot of snow fall with strong winds. Sometimes, the wind sends giant clouds of sand or dust racing across the desert. This cloud, called a sandstorm, is so rough it can rub the paint off cars in just a few hours!

Thunderstorms happen when a cumulonimbus cloud forms in the sky. Strong winds inside the cloud swirl rain, snow, and hailstones up and down. This makes electricity build up It escapes down to the ground as flashes of lightning. Thunder is the sound that lightning makes when it heats up the air around it. You always see lightning before you hear thunder, because light travels faster than sound. What about tornadoes? Tornadoes are violent, whirling winds. They are sometimes called twisters. This is a whirlwind that forms below a thunderstorm. The air inside a thundercloud slowly begins to spin around and around. The air spins faster and faster and the cloud begins to change shape. This cloud touches the ground and as it moves it destroys everything in its path. Tornadoes can be scary. People who live where tornadoes happen often have a special plan of where to go to help them be safe when a tornado is coming.

We can try to make a twister, or tornado cloud in a bottle. Here are the things we need. Demonstrate activity for cyclone in a bottle.

Music: (second circle)

Need for lesson – A percussion instrument, the book, “The Story of the Orchestra”, CD player, and pictures of percussion instruments.

Music 6A

We are going to talk about the family of percussion instruments. The percussion instrument makes sound when it is hit, shaken, or scraped. Drums are a kind of percussion instrument that are hit with drum sticks, to make sounds. Let’s look at some other kinds of percussion instruments. Look at the tambourine, what do you think is used to play this instrument; is it hit, shaken, or scraped? It takes a lot of practice to play a percussion instrument because you have to hit it with the right amount of strength, in the right place, and at the right time.

In the orchestra, the percussion family is the largest group of instruments played. The xylophone, timpani, cymbals, triangle, snare drum, bass drum, tambourine, maracas, gongs, chimes, celesta, and the piano are the percussion instruments in an orchestra.

Demonstrate the percussion instrument or instruments and allow children to try them.
