Boys and girls we know that fish are vertebrates, which means that they have a backbone. How do fish breathe? There is something else about fish we want to know. Fish are cold-blooded. Cold-blooded means if that if the water is cold – the fish’s body gets cold inside and out. If the water is warm – the fish’s body gets warm inside and out. If the water gets too cold, the fish can get so cold inside their body that they have a hard time moving. Sometimes fish can die if the inside of their body gets too cold or hot from the water. Fish cannot keep the temperature inside their body from changing. We call that cold-blooded.

People like you and I are warm-blooded. The inside temperature of our bodies stays the same, even if it is very cold outside.

Paper Plate Fish – Cut paper plates into fish shapes. Have tissue paper pieces cut into small squares and children can glue these onto the plate and add a wiggly eye.

Fish Design – These were cutout fish from a craft store and the children designed them with glitter paints.

Need for lesson – Kinds of Stems, seed that is growing inside the clear container or any plant with distinct stem showing, two or three celery stalks with leaves, and a white carnation flower

Let’s look at our plant growing in the vase. Which way is the stem growing from the seed? Stems grow up. The stem of a plant has an important job to do. One job is to hold the plant up. The stems helps to hold up the leaves and flowers so they can reach up into the sunlight and air. The second job the stem has is to carry water and minerals from the roots, up to the leaves and flowers of a plant.

There are many different kinds of stems. Let’s look at some of them. (demonstrate kinds of stem work, briefly describing each one)

We are going to do an experiment to help us see stems at work. We have some celery and a white carnation flower. We are going to put these into water that is colored with food coloring. Why do you think we are using celery? If our stems are working, what do you think we should see in the celery leaves and the flower? Let’s see what happens. (explain that it won’t happen right away, but that we need to just wait and check these every so often)

Place celery and flower into a vase or container with colored water and observe throughout the day.
