It isn’t too early to start preparing for an upcoming lesson on seeds. I usually introduce a Botany lesson on seeds about the third week of school, depending on how the first few weeks have been going. Prior to a discussion on seeds, a simple lesson on the parts of a plant are given. Then the various parts of a plant are talked about separately over the following three or four weeks.
Gathering a supply of large seeds such as lima beans, and having seeds already sprouting in a clear jar will be needed for the seed lesson. An important thing to mention to the children is that inside every seed is a tiny plant waiting to grow. A detailed description of the lesson and ideas for this can be found in Week 3 – Day 3 and Week 4 – Day 1of the curriculum pages. the parts of a seed itself will be highlighted and children enjoy opening up pre-soaked lima bean seeds to discover the tiny plant inside waiting to grow. Have fun as you begin such Botany lessons.
