Exercises in Math 1-10

Math Shelf

Children learn how to count in the Montessori classroom using a variety of materials such as number rods, sand paper numbers, and spindle boxes.

Other materials can be added, for additional practice of association of numeral and quantity of 1-10 concepts. These exercises can be fun for the child as some of the objects being counted will be interesting to them. Objects to be counted can be related to any lessons you may be learning about.

An example would be that of counting out small turtles if you are learning about turtles. Or, maybe snails (pictured below).

I thought I would share some ideas of things I use for these additional 1-10 counting exercises.

Once a child is working with, and is gaining and understanding of the 1-10 concept, the short bead stair is introduced. As children continue to make progress with the math materials, these beads will be an integral part of that progression. More on Montessori Math can be found on the website pages.
