Geography 46

The continent we are visiting is Europe. We talked about the country of Italy. What do you remember about Italy? Today we want to talk about another country in Europe, it is France. The Eiffel Tower is in Paris, France. We have talked a little about the Eiffel Tower before. Paris has many art galleries, containing some famous paintings. We have also learned about some French artist like Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet. Monet was the man painted the pond with lily pads. The type of dance called ballet, was first started in France.

Soccer, tennis, skiing, and rugby are some popular sports in France. Bicycling is another sport that is popular there. Each year they have a special bicycle race called Tour de France. The racers pedal for twenty days up and down one hundred and fifty miles of hills and valleys! A fun game children like to play is La Marelle Ronde, or escargot, which means snail. It is a hopscotch game that uses only one foot. The hopscotch game board, is drawn out in a spiral shapes, like a snail.

The main language spoken in France is French. Children usually go to school from 8:00 in the morning until 4:00 in the afternoon. School closes for two hours for lunch. Most places close for lunch and families meet at home together to have a large lunch meal and have a smaller dinner later in the evening.

In France cooking is considered an art. One famous French chef was Julia Child. She was from America, but studied in France at the famous cooking school, the Cordon Bleu. She was on TV and taught many people how to cook French foods. Some foods popular in France are crepes, quiche, vegetables, cheeses, and pastries. Adults like to drink coffee with hot milk. It is called cafe au lait. Escargot is another food often eaten in France. Escargot is snails. Would you like to try Escargot one day?

Science: (second circle)

Need for lesson – Parts of the Sun

Science 68

The weather is getting warmer outside. What shines down on the Earth to warm us up? The Sun. The sun is a middle-sized yellow star. It is a star just like the ones we see in night sky, but it is the only star we see during the daytime. The Sun is so big that you could fit more than 1 million Earths in it! it is a huge ball of hot glowing gases. How hot? The temperature is about 10,000 degrees on the surface and more than 28 million degrees at the core! The Sun is the closest star to the Earth. The Sun’s energy drives the weather and climate on the Earth, and supports all life that is on it. We have learned how plants need the sun to help them make its food. remember what that is called, photosynthesis.

The Sun’s surface, or atmosphere, is divided into three regions: the photosphere, the chromosphere, and the solar corona. There is something called Thermonuclear Fusion. This is the process in which a star produces its light, heat, and energy. This happens at the core of the star. The core is superheated to millions of degrees. This heat travels towards the surface and radiates out into the universe. We can feel the warmth of the Sun’s heat here on the Earth, especially now as Spring is here.
