Science 67

We have found out that there are four seasons in a year. Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Very soon the season is going to change from Winter to Spring. What are some things that tell us Spring is coming? We start to see flowers blooming. The leaves on the trees are starting to bud. We feel the air warming up as the sun stays out longer. The grass is starting to grow. Birds that flew South for the Winter are flying back and hibernating animals are waking up.

It often rains in the Spring which helps the flowers and grass to grow. When it rains and the sun is out what can we sometimes see in the sky? Rainbows. We have learned about rainbows and Spring is a good time to see one. Since the weather is warmer people enjoy being outside having picnics, flying kites, and playing sports like baseball or soccer.

Spring is also the time of the year when many baby animals are born. Baby sheep are called lambs. Baby cows are called calves. We can see ducklings swimming with their mothers. What do we call baby dogs? Cats? Swans? Hens? Horses?

Many people plant seeds and start gardens in the Spring. Seeds can be started in pots to sprout inside the house and when they are ready to be planted in the ground it has usually has warmed up enough outside to plant them and start a garden. People may choose to plant a vegetable garden, flower garden, or both. Spring is a special time of the year because the Earth is warming up and many people are ready for warmer weather after a cold Winter!

Additional Work:

Kites 1-10 – I made these kites using scrapbook paper and made bows by tying small pieces of ribbon.

Writing Number 1-20 – I cut these flowers out, added the numerals, and made them into cards. Children place numeral cards in order across their mat, roll out the register tape and write the numerals 1-20. (picture of baskets with flowers found at kidssoup.com)
