Need for lesson – Any work that has animal tracks.

If we were taking a walk in the woods during the Winter time what do you think we might see in the snow on the ground? We might find animal tracks. As the animals walk along in the snow, they leave footprints. Every kind of animal makes a different kind of track. Other places you can see footprints of animals is at the beach in the sand, or in the mud or dirt in your own back yard. Animal tracks can sometimes tell us a story. What kind of things do you think we can learn from animal tracks? We can find out which animals were walking in the area. We may be able to learn how many animals were in the area, is there one set of tracks or two? Next time you are outside in the snow or even in the dirt, look for animal tracks and try to identify, or figure out which animal may have left those tracks.

Animal Track Prints – I think these are from discountschoolsupply.com. Provide black or brown paint and white paper. Children can make prints in the snow.

Take Note!

Read the story and demonstrate work choices. As a Ukrainian Folk Tale, some of the words may be unfamilar to the children. Read some of the words to them and ask them to listen for them in the story. After you are finsihed reading you can ask the children what they think the words means and discuss. Sequence work is always great as well as sorting out and talking about parts of the story, the setting, its characters, etc.

This will be a Book on the Shelf.

The Mitten – Children can color and glue the animals to the mitten.

Mittens – The children can color or paint mitten shapes. Remind them that it is a pair of mittens so they want to try and make them match. Or they can make two different mittens. These were painted with dot paints.

Additional Work:

1-10 Mitten Counting – I made these with felt and stuffed them a little. The basket has snowflakes on it and small wooden mittens hanging off the side.

1-10 Snowflake Counting – I used felt to cut out mitten shapes and fabric paint to add numerals. Children count out snowflakes.

Mitten Hanging – I asked a friend to make this mini clothesline for me. I made the mittens with craft foam and fabric paint.
