During this week we talked about apples and the harvest season. We looked at parts of an apple. The children enjoyed making apple art with leaf hand prints. We have a Poem Basket on the shelf that contains the poem, Five Red Apples. Another story we read was, “Ten Apples Up On Top”.
Last week we talked about the sense of sight and touch. We read about some children that are blind. I have the book, The Ugly Duckling, in Braille. We look at it and compare it to the same book in English. I ask the children why the braille one doesn’t have any pictures and a discussion follows. The two books are on the shelf as a work choice for the children to use.

We talked about sunflowers in the fall. They are ready for seed harvesting! The children enjoyed making sunflower at the art table and tweezing out the seeds from a dried sunflower.
I must first apologize to you parents for the next few blog post as they are terrible pictures. I was having trouble with my camera. I would not even use them, however I chose some of the better ones to at least share some of the lessons and the children working. I know how much you are ready to see them. I also had trouble placing the logo mark on the photos so they are quite a mess!
Prior to this lesson, we discussed the Land/Water Globe and the Continent Globe. We then took a play dough ‘globe’ and I cut in it half to demonstrate how the Hemisphere Map is a flat representation of the Continent Globe. A demonstration followed on how to make a Hemisphere Map as a work choice.
We started to introduce group lessons about the middle of the second week of school. We introduced the five classes of vertebrates. On another day we read about mammals and found out how we now if an animal belongs in the mammal group. We will continue with remaining groups during the next few months.
